Seed Cycling: Nourishing Through Your Seasons
Flax, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds, rotated with the phases of your cycle. Here's what seed cycling is, what science says, and how to make it a nourishing little ritual.

A Ritual of Seeds
It's deeply empowering to understand our bodies as the sacred temples they are, to listen to their wisdom, honor their natural rhythms, and nourish them with love and intention. The more intimately connected we become with our temple bodies, the more we learn to recognize what they need and move in harmony with our cycles.
Our menstrual cycles are an extraordinary expression of the intelligence of the female body. Throughout each month, our hormones fluctuate, influencing our energy, appetite, mood, sleep, and reproductive health. Understanding these changes allows us to nourish ourselves more intentionally throughout each phase.
Seed cycling is a beautiful practice for honoring this connection, incorporating different seeds throughout the two halves of our menstrual cycle. Rooted in holistic nourishment, it's a simple ritual that can easily become part of everyday life, whether sprinkled over morning oats, blended into smoothies, or added to nourishing bowls.
Understanding Your Cycle
Our menstrual cycles are commonly divided into four phases: menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal. Seed cycling focuses on the two main hormonal phases.
The follicular phase begins on the first day of menstruation and continues until ovulation. During this time, estrogen gradually rises as the body prepares to release an egg. Many women experience renewed energy, greater mental clarity, and an increased desire for movement and creativity as this phase progresses.
The luteal phase begins after ovulation and continues until menstruation. Progesterone rises, preparing the uterine lining for a possible pregnancy. As the cycle comes to an end, hormonal changes may influence appetite, energy, sleep, and mood.
Every woman's experience is unique, and our cycles don't necessarily follow a perfect 28-day calendar. Learning to recognize your own patterns is an important part of becoming more connected to your body.
How Seed Cycling Works
Traditional seed cycling incorporates two different combinations of seeds throughout the menstrual cycle.
Follicular phase: From menstruation until ovulation
- 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds daily
- 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds daily
Luteal phase: From ovulation until your next period
- 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds daily
- 1 tablespoon of sunflower seeds daily
For a typical 28-day cycle, these phases are often described as days 1–14 and 15–28, although ovulation varies from woman to woman.
Following the Moon
For women with irregular or absent cycles, another traditional approach is to follow the lunar phases, beginning flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds at the new moon and switching to sesame and sunflower seeds at the full moon.
The Power of Seeds
One of the reasons I love seed cycling is the incredible nutritional value of the seeds. These little gifts from the earth are abundant in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, fiber, and beneficial plant compounds that contribute to our overall health.
Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds are rich in plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and lignans. Lignans are naturally occurring compounds that have attracted scientific interest for their potential relationship with estrogen metabolism.
Ground flaxseeds are particularly beneficial because grinding helps make their nutrients more accessible during digestion.
Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds provide zinc, magnesium, iron, healthy fats, and plant-based protein. Zinc is involved in reproductive health and numerous enzyme functions, while magnesium supports normal muscle and nerve function. Iron is especially important for women who menstruate, as it's essential for healthy red blood cells and oxygen transport.
Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds offer calcium, iron, healthy fats, and beneficial plant compounds, including lignans such as sesamin. These compounds are being studied for their antioxidant and metabolic properties.
Tahini, made from ground sesame seeds, is one of my favorite ways to enjoy them. It's delicious drizzled over vegetables, blended into dressings, or added to creamy sauces.
Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds are especially rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect our cells from oxidative damage. They also contain magnesium, healthy fats, protein, and other valuable nutrients.
Their delicate, nutty flavor makes them a wonderful addition to salads, grain bowls, and homemade plant-based sauces.
Seed Cycling and Hormonal Health
Our hormones are part of an intricate system influenced by nutrition, sleep, stress, movement, and overall health. Nourishing ourselves with a diverse range of whole plant foods provides essential nutrients involved in many of these processes.
Flaxseed lignans have been studied for their relationship with estrogen metabolism, while nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids contribute to normal physiological function.
Although research specifically examining the traditional seed cycling schedule is still limited, the nutritional benefits of these seeds are well established. There's growing scientific interest in how their individual nutrients and plant compounds relate to hormonal and reproductive health.
I love that seed cycling encourages us to become more conscious of our nourishment and the changing rhythms of our bodies. It's an opportunity to approach our cycles with greater awareness and make caring for ourselves a daily ritual of self-love.
Easy Ways to Enjoy Your Seeds
Seed cycling doesn't require complicated recipes or ingredients. You can easily incorporate your daily seeds into meals you're already enjoying.
- Morning oats: Stir ground flaxseeds into oatmeal, overnight oats, or chia pudding.
- Smoothies: Blend your seeds with berries, banana, leafy greens, and plant-based milk.
- Nourishing bowls: Sprinkle pumpkin, sesame, or sunflower seeds over salads, roasted vegetables, and Buddha bowls.
- Creamy dressings: Blend tahini with lemon, garlic, and water for a delicious sesame dressing.
- Energy bites: Combine ground seeds with dates, oats, nut butter, and cacao for a nourishing treat.
Store your seeds in airtight containers, and refrigerate ground flaxseeds to help preserve their delicate oils. If you're new to eating seeds regularly, gradually increase your intake to give your digestive system time to adjust.
Honoring Your Temple Body
Our bodies are miracles, and nourishment is one of the most intimate expressions of self-love. Every meal offers an opportunity to honor the life within us, connect with the earth, and celebrate the beautiful relationship between what we consume and how we feel.
Seed cycling is a simple way to cultivate this connection, bringing together nutrient-rich plant foods and a deeper awareness of our natural rhythms.
Listen to your temple. Honor its wisdom. Nourish it with the love it desires and deserves. 🌺
