Calcium for Plant-Based Bodies

No dairy, no problem. A loving guide to the plant foods that support strong bones, from tofu to tahini to leafy greens.

Strong bones, soft heart

I want to feel strong in my body for decades to come, dancing, hiking, traveling, carrying groceries up stairs. Calcium is part of that foundation, and you can absolutely get it from plants with a little intention.

Where to find it

  • Calcium-set tofu (look for calcium sulfate on the label) is one of the richest sources.
  • Fortified plant milks and yogurts, shake the carton, as calcium can settle.
  • Low-oxalate leafy greens like kale, bok choy and collard greens.
  • Tahini, almonds, dried figs, white beans and fortified cereals.

A note on spinach

Spinach contains calcium, but also oxalates that make most of it hard to absorb. Enjoy it, just don’t count on it as your main calcium source.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, so care for both together. If you’re unsure whether you’re getting enough, a registered dietitian can help.
