Vegan Beauty: How to Read Labels for Cruelty-Free Products
Vegan, cruelty-free, clean… what do those labels really mean? Here's how to choose beauty that's kind to animals and to your skin.

Beauty That Loves Back
I've always believed that self-care is a sacred expression of self-love. The way we care for our skin, anoint our bodies with nourishing oils, and create little rituals of pleasure throughout our day can become a beautiful way of honoring the temples we live in.
And for me, there's something especially wonderful about knowing that the products I'm using haven't come at the expense of another being's suffering.
I love skincare. The feeling of a luxurious serum melting into my skin, the aroma of botanical ingredients, the pleasure of taking a few moments to care for myself. I want my beauty rituals to feel sensual, nourishing, and aligned with the compassion I carry into all other areas of my life.
But the beauty industry has a complicated relationship with animals. From animal testing to ingredients derived from insects, fish, sheep, and other creatures, there's sadly a lot of cruelty happening behind those bottles. And, totally unnecessarily.
Thankfully, we have more compassionate options than ever before, and choosing vegan beauty doesn't mean sacrificing quality, effectiveness, or luxury. Some of the most wonderful skincare ingredients come directly from the plant kingdom!
Vegan vs. Cruelty-Free: What's the Difference?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they're actually quite different.
Vegan means a product contains no animal-derived ingredients. That includes honey, beeswax, lanolin, carmine, and other substances sourced from animals.
Cruelty-free generally means a brand doesn't conduct or commission animal testing on its products or ingredients, although standards vary depending on the certification or company making the claim.
Here's where things get interesting. A product can be vegan while its manufacturer still has animal-testing concerns. Likewise, a cruelty-free brand might sell products containing animal ingredients.
Personally, I want both! And whenever possible, I prefer supporting companies that are entirely vegan rather than brands that offer only a few vegan products.
Certifications Worth Looking For
When shopping for beauty products, these are some of the most helpful certifications and resources:
- Leaping Bunny: One of the most recognized cruelty-free certifications, with standards addressing animal testing throughout the supply chain.
- PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies: A directory of companies with animal-testing commitments, including brands recognized as vegan.
- The Vegan Society: Its Vegan Trademark identifies products meeting established vegan standards.
- Certified Vegan: A certification for products that meet its animal ingredient and animal-testing requirements.
A cute bunny on a bottle doesn't automatically mean a product has been independently certified. It's always worth looking a little deeper.
Animal Ingredients Hiding in Your Beauty Products
One of the most surprising things about transitioning to vegan beauty is discovering how many animal-derived ingredients are hiding in products we use every day.
And some of them have names you'd never associate with animals!
Ingredients to Watch For
- Beeswax (Cera Alba): Produced by honeybees; common in lip balms and creams
- Honey: Produced by honeybees; used in masks, cleansers, and moisturizers
- Carmine (CI 75470): Red pigment made from cochineal insects, often found in makeup
- Lanolin: Derived from sheep's wool; used in moisturizers and lip products
- Collagen: Often sourced from fish, cattle, or pigs
- Keratin: Can come from feathers, wool, or other animal sources
- Squalene: May be sourced from shark liver, although plant-derived alternatives exist
- Guanine: Can be sourced from fish scales and used in shimmering cosmetics
- Shellac: A resin secreted by lac insects, used in certain nail and cosmetic products
- Glycerin: Can be plant-derived, animal-derived, or synthetic
- Stearic acid: Can come from plant or animal fats
The good news is that many of these ingredients have wonderful vegan alternatives.
For example, squalane can be derived from olives or sugarcane, plant-based waxes can replace beeswax, and botanical oils can provide beautiful nourishment without relying on animal ingredients.
I also want to emphasize that *natural* doesn't automatically mean vegan. Honey, beeswax, and lanolin are all natural ingredients, but they're still animal-derived.
A Little Note About Nail Salons
If you love getting your nails done, you'll be happy to know that vegan nail salons and salons offering vegan polish options can be found in many cities!
One ingredient to watch for is shellac, a resin produced by lac insects. However, there's an important distinction: Shellac is also a brand name for a popular gel nail system, and the name alone doesn't tell you whether a particular manicure contains insect-derived shellac.
Some nail polishes and treatments may also contain animal-derived ingredients or come from brands with animal-testing concerns.
Before booking, ask whether the salon uses vegan polish and other nail products. You can also search for salons specializing in vegan and cruelty-free manicures.
How to Read Beauty Labels with Confidence
Once you know what to look for, shopping for vegan beauty becomes considerably easier.
I recommend beginning with the brand itself. Does it clearly state that its products are vegan? Is the entire company vegan, or only certain products? Does it have a transparent animal-testing policy?
Then look at the individual product.
My Simple Shopping Checklist
1. Look for vegan certification or a clear vegan statement. This helps identify products free from animal-derived ingredients. 2. Check the cruelty-free policy. Look for recognized certification or transparent information about animal testing. 3. Read the ingredients. Pay particular attention to ingredients that can come from either plants or animals. 4. Check the individual product. Even brands with mostly vegan collections may have exceptions. 5. Ask questions! If you can't determine an ingredient's source, contact the company.
I love supporting businesses that are genuinely transparent about their ingredients and values. If a company is proud of its ethical commitments, it should be willing to explain them. You might find along your research that there's many companies that make big claims, yet hide a lot.
Your skin deserves products that are both compassionate and appropriate for its individual needs.

Creating a Beautiful Vegan Skincare Ritual
I believe skincare should be something we look forward to, a few moments each day to slow down, connect with ourselves, and nourish our temple bodies.
You don't need an elaborate ten-step routine or a bathroom filled with expensive products. A handful of thoughtfully chosen essentials can be wonderfully effective.
Cleanse
Begin with a gentle vegan cleanser that removes makeup, sunscreen, and everyday impurities without leaving your skin feeling stripped.
If your skin is dry or sensitive, you may prefer a creamy cleanser. If you have oilier skin, a lightweight gel might feel more comfortable.
Nourish
This is where I especially love incorporating beautiful botanical ingredients.
Serums containing hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or niacinamide can help address concerns such as dehydration, uneven skin tone, and the appearance of fine lines.
I love the ritual of gently massaging a serum into freshly cleansed skin, taking a few moments to enjoy the experience rather than rushing through it.
Moisturize
A good moisturizer helps support your skin barrier and prevent moisture loss.
Look for ingredients such as plant-derived squalane, glycerin, ceramides, and nourishing botanical oils.
Choose a texture that feels wonderful on your skin, whether that's a lightweight lotion or a rich, velvety cream.
Protect
Daily sunscreen is one of the most important parts of caring for our skin, particularly when it comes to protecting against sun damage and premature skin aging.
Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that meets your vegan and cruelty-free preferences.
And don't forget your neck, chest, and hands!
Beauty, Compassion, and Conscious Choices
Our beauty rituals are such an intimate part of our lives. The way we touch our skin, care for our bodies, and choose the products we bring into our homes offers another opportunity to live in alignment with our values.
And the more we learn about what goes into our cosmetics, the more empowered we become as consumers.
I believe the beauty industry has an incredible opportunity to evolve toward a future where luxury, innovation, and effectiveness exist alongside compassion for animals.
Every time we choose a vegan, cruelty-free product, we're supporting that evolution. If you end up purchasing from a company that isn't 100% vegan, I like to keep in mind that we're helping the demand for their more compassionate products, hopefully inspiring them to focus on those over cruel ingredients.
So enjoy your skincare rituals, my love! Indulge in the silky textures, the beautiful botanical aromas, and the pleasure of caring for yourself.
Our temple bodies deserve to be adored, and the beautiful beings we share this planet with deserve our compassion. 🌺

A Skincare Brand I Love: Olive Tree People
Now, I want to share a brand that's become especially meaningful to me: Olive Tree People (Oliveda).
As someone who's explored countless skincare products over the years literally accross the entire world, I can genuinely say that I haven't found anything that works as beautifully for my skin as their olive-tree-based skincare.
What initially attracted me was their philosophy of working with the extraordinary properties of the olive tree, one of nature's most ancient and revered sources of nourishment.
The olive tree has been celebrated for thousands of years throughout Mediterranean cultures. Its fruit, leaves, and oils have long been associated with vitality, abundance, and well-being.
There's something I find deeply special about incorporating ingredients from these ancient trees into my daily beauty rituals.
But, I want to be completely transparent about something important.
Olive Tree People isn't an entirely vegan company. Some products in its broader range contain animal-derived ingredients, including honey or fish-derived substances. I actually didn't know this because my friend who introduced me to the company told me it was vegan, not knowing there were two products at the time that weren't. I ended up falling in love with the vegan products and later discovering there's a few products with honey, and one (at this time) with fish.
This is something I genuinely wish were different. It's important to me that my purchases reflect my compassion for animals, and I want to encourage businesses to move toward completely animal-free formulations.
Olive Tree People is my one exception because I genuinely connect with much of the company's philosophy and its emphasis on the olive tree, and because I've experienced such wonderful results from the skincare I've personally used. Until I find a company just as good that's 100% vegan, I've been sharing OTP. (Also a girl can dream- they might go fully vegan one day!)
I believe in acknowledging the positive things a company is doing while still being honest about the areas where I'd love to see it evolve. And I would absolutely love to see Olive Tree People become entirely vegan one day!
Choosing the Right Products
If you're exploring Olive Tree People, please make sure the individual products you choose are vegan.
I recommend checking the current ingredient lists carefully before purchasing, particularly for products containing honey, marine ingredients, or other potentially animal-derived substances.
For me, the magic is in the ancient olive tree itself, and that's where I want my skincare to come from!
