Raising Compassionate Kids

Children are born loving animals. How to nurture that natural kindness, at the table, in nature and in the way we talk about the world.

They already know

Beautiful soul, have you ever watched a little one meet a puppy, a duck, a calf? Pure wonder and love. Children are born compassionate. Our gift to them is to protect that tenderness instead of teaching them to look away.

Let them grow food

Plant strawberries, herbs or tomatoes together. Let them get their hands dirty. Kids who grow food are far more excited to eat it. Bring them to farmers' markets and let them choose a new vegetable to try.

Cook together

Smoothie bowls, rice paper rolls, pita pizzas and chocolate-dipped strawberries are perfect for little hands. When they help make it, they're proud to eat it.

If your family is raising children vegan, it can absolutely be healthy with good planning. Please work with a pediatrician or registered dietitian, and make sure they get B12, vitamin D, iodine, iron, calcium, omega-3s and enough energy-dense foods like nut butters and avocado.

Talk with gentleness

Answer their questions honestly and at their level: "We don't eat animals because we love them and they want to live too." Teach them to be kind to friends who eat differently. Compassion includes everyone.

Read books about animals, visit sanctuaries, rescue a little bug from the floor and carry it outside. These small moments grow big hearts. Krystal x
