A golden little morning ritual
My mornings are sacred to me. Before the phone, before the world rushes in, I like to give myself something golden. This smoothie feels like that, sunlight in a glass, a little Ayurvedic tradition, and a few quiet minutes that belong only to me.
If I were making myself a slow, beautiful breakfast, this is the glass I would reach for: mango sweetness, a little cardamom warmth, and the creamy softness of soy yogurt. Mmmm… sunshine you can sip. Add a squeeze of lime if you love that bright finish.
The optional amla brings a tart, earthy note. Amla, also called amalaki or Indian gooseberry, has a place in Ayurvedic traditions. I can appreciate that tradition without promising this smoothie will detox, balance hormones or treat anything. The pleasure is real; the medical promises do not belong here.
Protein first, botanical extras second
Soy milk and soy yogurt bring the main vegan protein. Pick a higher-protein yogurt if that suits you and check both labels, amounts differ. Oat, coconut and almond alternatives often have less protein. If using those, a side of tofu toast or another protein food can make breakfast more substantial.
Mango contributes vitamin C and carotenoids. A fortified soy milk may add calcium and B12, but only if its label says so. I do not count a pinch of herbal powder as a reliable nutrient dose; processing and products vary. Your everyday food foundations matter much more than a fashionable scoop.
Amla, with care, not a compulsory scoop
Banyan Botanicals Amla powder is an optional addition, not something you need for the smoothie to be nourishing. The small amount below is for flavor in this recipe, not a recommended supplement dose. Read the current product label, and ask a clinician or pharmacist before using herbal supplements if you take medicines, have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding. You can leave the powder out and enjoy every lovely mouthful.
I have also included Banyan Botanicals Ashwagandha on Favorites, but I am not putting a routine dose into everyone's breakfast. Ashwagandha can interact with medicines, has been linked to rare liver injury, and should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is not recommended for people with thyroid or autoimmune disorders or before surgery. Medicines for thyroid function, blood pressure, diabetes, seizures, sedation or immune suppression need particular attention. Only consider adding it after individualized professional advice, using your product's label, not a spoonful prescribed by a blog.
Make it deliciously yours
Frozen mango makes it thick without watering down the flavor. Start with less milk, blend, then loosen to the texture you love. Amla can be quite tart: begin with the smaller amount, or leave it out completely. A little maple syrup is welcome if your fruit needs it, no moral judgment attached.
Pistachios make a gorgeous finish if nuts suit you. Sip it alongside something more filling if that is what your body asks for. A beautiful breakfast is not measured by how little you can eat.
The recipe
Golden Mango, Amla & Cardamom Smoothie
- Serves
- 1
- Prep
- 5 minutes
- Cook
- No cooking
Ingredients
- 1 cup (165 g) frozen mango chunks
- ½ cup (120 g) plain unsweetened soy yogurt
- ¾ cup (180 ml) unsweetened soy milk, preferably fortified, plus a splash if needed
- ⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ⅛–¼ teaspoon Banyan Botanicals Amla powder (optional; use only if suitable for you)
- 1 teaspoon lime juice, to taste (optional)
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup, to taste (optional)
- 1 teaspoon chopped pistachios, to finish (optional)
Method
- Add the soy milk, soy yogurt, mango and cardamom to a blender.
- If amla is suitable for you, add just ⅛ teaspoon to begin; otherwise leave it out. Blend until completely creamy, stopping to scrape the sides as needed.
- Taste. Add optional lime or maple syrup, and only increase amla to ¼ teaspoon if you enjoy the tartness and your product's directions allow it. Add a splash of milk if too thick and blend again.
- Pour into one glass, finish with optional pistachios and enjoy straight away. Ashwagandha is not part of the default recipe.
Notes & storage
Contains soy and optional pistachios. Select alternatives that suit your allergies, noting that protein and texture will change.
Herbal powders are optional supplements, not necessary smoothie ingredients. Check the current label and suitability with a qualified clinician. The recipe quantity is a flavor suggestion, not a supplement regimen.
Ashwagandha is deliberately excluded from the ingredient list; see the safety section before considering it. Amla-free is delicious too.
Best freshly blended. If needed, cover and refrigerate promptly for up to 24 hours, then stir before drinking.
